How to Add Chapters to a YouTube Video (Exact Rules and Steps)

To add chapters to a YouTube video, open YouTube Studio, choose Content, pick the video, and type a list of timestamps and titles into the description. Three rules apply: the first timestamp must be 00:00, the list needs at least three timestamps in ascending order, and every chapter must run at least 10 seconds. Save, and the chapters appear on the progress bar. A manual list overrides YouTube's automatic chapters. Break any rule and YouTube ignores the whole list, so check them before you save.

The exact rules, in one table

These come from YouTube's own help page on video chapters. Other guides repeat them, but that page is the one to trust if anything changes.

How to add chapters manually, step by step

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Content from the left menu.
  2. Click the video you want to edit.
  3. In the Description box, add one timestamp and title per line. Start with 00:00.
  4. Check that you have three or more lines, that the times only go up, and that no two are closer than 10 seconds.
  5. Click Save.

YouTube's help page adds a note: if you don't yet have access to chapters, you may need to apply for access to Advanced features. If chapters never appear even though your list is correct, look at that first.

What a correct list looks like

Here is a 48-minute interview with a financial coach. Titles describe what is said, not just "Part 2".

00:00 Why most budgets fail by February
03:12 The three-account system explained
11:40 What to do with irregular income
22:05 Paying off debt vs. building a buffer
35:30 Listener question: saving with a partner
44:10 First step to take this week

For videos longer than an hour, use the hours format, such as 1:04:32.

Automatic chapters: when they help and when they don't

YouTube can also generate chapters on its own. In Studio, open the video, click Show more, and under Automatic Chapters choose "Allow automatic chapters". Per YouTube, that box is checked by default for new uploads, and you can also change it in bulk.

There are limits. Not every video is eligible, and not every eligible video gets them. If the channel has active strikes, or the content may be inappropriate for some viewers, the feature won't be available. Creators can opt out per video, and a manual list overrides the automatic one.

The practical difference is control. Automatic chapters are fine for an old video you will never touch again. For anything you want found in search or shared with a specific section in mind, write your own titles. You know which phrase a viewer would type; the algorithm only knows where the topic seems to shift.

Mistakes that stop chapters from showing

  • Starting at 0:05 or 0:15. The most common cause. Put 00:00 first, even if it just says "Intro".
  • Only two entries. A two-line list will not turn into chapters. Add a third by splitting the longest section.
  • Chapters under 10 seconds. A quick "Recap" at 12:00 followed by something at 12:06 breaks the rule. Merge them.
  • Timestamps out of order. If you edit the video and move segments, re-check the whole list.
  • Putting the list in a comment. A timestamp in a comment becomes a clickable link, but it does not create chapters. The list belongs in the description.
  • Vague titles. "Next topic" tells nobody anything. A title like "Irregular income" works as a heading for a viewer and as text a search engine can read.

How to choose where chapters go

Chapters work best at topic changes, not at fixed intervals. Some practical guidelines:

  • Interviews and podcasts: one chapter per question or theme. A guest story that runs eight minutes can be one chapter.
  • Sermons and talks: scripture reading, main points, and the closing appeal usually split cleanly. See Echoreel for churches.
  • Courses and lessons: one chapter per concept or demonstration step. See Echoreel for course creators.
  • Property tours: one per room or feature, which helps buyers skip to the kitchen. See Echoreel for real estate agents.

Aim for between five and fifteen chapters on a typical 30-60 minute video. That is a judgment call rather than a rule, so adjust to how often your topic changes.

Getting the timestamps without scrubbing through the video

The slow part is finding the times. The usual manual method is to watch at 1.5x speed with the description open and write down each topic change.

Echoreel is a faster route if you publish long talking videos regularly. You upload the recording, and it produces a YouTube SEO pack along with ranked Shorts, a blog post and social posts. Read the chapter list it gives you against the video before you paste it in, because you still want to confirm the 00:00 start and the 10-second spacing. For the wider picture on titles and descriptions, see our guide to YouTube SEO titles, descriptions and chapters. You can sign up here or look at pricing first.

If you also want to cut clips from the same video, the guide on turning long videos into Shorts covers that, and the comparison pages show how Echoreel differs from other repurposing tools. Podcasters can start at Echoreel for podcasters; coaches at Echoreel for coaches.

A quick pre-save checklist

  • First line is 00:00.
  • Three or more lines.
  • Times only increase.
  • Nothing shorter than 10 seconds.
  • Each title says what the section covers.
  • The list is in the description, not a comment.

Frequently asked questions

What are the rules for YouTube chapters?

The first timestamp must be 00:00, the description needs at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. If any of these is missed, YouTube won't show the chapters.

Why are my YouTube chapters not showing?

Usually the list doesn't start at 00:00, has fewer than three entries, contains a chapter under 10 seconds, or sits in a comment instead of the description. If the list is correct, you may not have access to chapters yet. YouTube's help page says to apply for Advanced features in that case.

Can I add chapters on a video that's already published?

Yes. Open the video from the Content tab in YouTube Studio, edit the description to add the timestamp list, and save. Adding your own chapters overrides automatic ones.

How do I turn off automatic chapters?

In YouTube Studio, open the video, click Show more, and clear the Allow automatic chapters box, then save. Creators can opt out per video. Writing your own timestamp list also replaces them.

Do chapters help with search?

They give search engines and viewers text describing each section, which is why specific titles are worth the effort. I can't promise a ranking effect, since YouTube doesn't publish one, but clear titles help viewers find the part they came for.

Can Echoreel create the chapter list for me?

Echoreel produces a YouTube SEO pack from your long video. Review the result against the rules above before pasting it into your description.
