Free YouTube Description Generator
This page wraps a free tool that drafts a YouTube description from what you tell it about your video. You give it a topic, a transcript or rough notes. It gives you a description you can edit: an opening line written for search, a short summary, chapter timestamps if you supply them, links and a few hashtags.
It is a drafting aid. It does not watch your video and it does not know your channel. The better the input, the better the draft, and you should always read the result before you publish.
What the generator does
A good description has a few jobs. It tells a viewer in a sentence or two whether the video is for them. It gives YouTube text to understand the topic. It points people to the next step, like a link, a guide or a subscribe prompt. The generator produces a draft built around those jobs:
- An opening that carries the keyword. Viewers see only the start of a description before the "show more" button. Sources differ on how much, but Hootsuite puts it at roughly the first 100 to 150 characters, so the draft puts the main point first.
- A plain-language summary of what the video covers, written in full sentences rather than a pile of keywords.
- Chapter lines in the timestamp format YouTube reads, when you give it the times.
- A short set of hashtags that match the topic.
- Placeholders for links to your site, your guide, your booking page or your other episodes.
How to use it
- Add the video's topic or transcript. A transcript works best because the draft can quote what you actually said. If you only have notes, paste those.
- Name the main keyword. This is the phrase a viewer would type to find the video, such as "first-time home buyer mistakes" or "how to prepare a sermon series".
- Add timestamps if you have them. Write them as time and label, one per line. The generator will tidy them into a chapter list.
- Generate, then edit. Change anything that does not sound like you. Cut anything that is not true of the video.
- Check the length and the links, then paste it into YouTube Studio.
Example input and output
The example below is made up to show the shape of the result. It is not a real channel or a real video.
Example input
- Video: A 40-minute podcast episode with a mortgage broker on common mistakes before applying for a loan.
- Main keyword: first-time home buyer mistakes
- Timestamps: 00:00 Intro, 03:10 Changing jobs mid-application, 11:45 Large deposits before approval, 24:20 Pre-approval vs. approval, 36:05 Questions to ask a lender
Example output (draft)
Four first-time home buyer mistakes that can slow down or sink a mortgage application, and what to do about each one, explained by a working mortgage broker.
In this episode we cover why a job change mid-application worries lenders, how a large deposit can trigger questions, and the difference between pre-approval and approval. We finish with questions worth asking any lender before you commit.

Notice what the draft does not do. It does not promise a result, and it does not invent facts the broker never said. If your draft contains a claim you cannot back up from the video, delete it.
YouTube's own rules to check before you publish
These come from YouTube or from published guides on how YouTube behaves. They change now and then, so confirm in YouTube Studio if something looks off.
| Item | What to know | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Description length | YouTube's help page says a description can hold a maximum of 5,000 characters. | YouTube Help |
| Chapters | The first timestamp has to be 00:00, you need at least three timestamps in ascending order, and each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long. | YouTube Help |
| Hashtags | Sprout Social advises sticking to 15 hashtags at most and notes that only the first three in your description show above the video title. | Sprout Social |
| Visible opening | Only the first 100 to 150 characters or so show before "show more". | Hootsuite |
The chapter rule trips people up most often. If your first line is 03:10 instead of 00:00, YouTube will not turn the list into chapters, however carefully you formatted the rest.
Limits of this tool
- It only knows what you give it. It cannot see your video, so it cannot check that your timestamps match the footage. Scrub through and confirm each one.
- It writes a draft, not a finished description. Links, names, offers and dates need a human check.
- It does not guarantee views or rankings. A description helps YouTube and viewers understand the video. It does not rescue a weak title or thumbnail.
- It writes descriptions only. For titles, tags, a blog post or Shorts clips, you need a different tool or the full Echoreel product.
- Any size limit on the input is shown next to the input box on the tool itself.
When a single description is not enough
If you publish one long video a week, the description is one piece of a bigger job. You also need a title, chapters, a few Shorts cut from the best moments, a blog post and some social posts. Echoreel does that whole set from one long talking video: ranked Shorts, a YouTube SEO pack, a blog post and social posts. See pricing or sign up to try it.
If you only want keyword research and channel analytics, a dedicated SEO tool may suit you better. We compare the two approaches on the vidIQ comparison page, and you can browse the others on the compare hub.
For more on titles, descriptions and chapters together, read our guide to YouTube SEO titles, descriptions and chapters. If you want clips too, see how to turn long videos into Shorts.
Who tends to use it
Anyone who posts long spoken video and does not enjoy writing the description afterward. That includes podcasters, coaches, real estate agents and churches posting weekly messages.

Frequently asked questions
Is the YouTube description generator free?
Yes, the tool on this page is free to use. If you want the full set of outputs from one long video, including Shorts, a blog post and social posts, see the pricing page.
How long can a YouTube description be?
YouTube's help page gives a maximum of 5,000 characters. Only the opening lines show before "show more", so put the main point and your keyword first.
Why are my timestamps not turning into chapters?
YouTube requires the first timestamp to be 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and chapters of at least 10 seconds each. Check those three things first.
How many hashtags should I use?
Stay under 15. Sprout Social notes only the first three in a description appear above the title. A handful of relevant hashtags is plenty.
Can I publish the generated description as it is?
Read it first. The tool cannot see your video, so check that every claim, link and timestamp is correct and that the tone sounds like you.
Does a better description improve my rankings?
It helps viewers and YouTube understand what the video is about, but it cannot promise more views. Title, thumbnail and the video itself matter at least as much.
